Ink magpie
Jiri Straka
Welcome to Jiri Straka´s official website.
Jiri Straka has mastered the traditional
ways and techniques of Chinese ink painting, but he does not keen to get
bind with a rigid adherence to its rules. He has progressed to creating mature ink works, that would according to the traditional terminology fall into the so called "boneless painting" category.
Jiri Straka´s performance of ink and wash paintings is an integral part of his artistic style, an essential and crucial part of his painting. By connecting the Western artistic tradition of grand dimensions paintings with the completely different Chinese painting tradition, Jiri Straka is creating an unique and inimitabe style of public ink painting.
To work with porcelain, it is not only the fragility and the historical burden of this medium that is attractive, but also the uncertainty of the result of often many days or weeks of intensive work.
Painting on fans was a popular discipline of renowned
artists already in old China. The shape of the fan gave the artists interesting
composition possibilities. Jiri Straka inserts in this traditional medium elements
of playfulness, irony and black humor.
